EMPLOYEE DRESS CODE

 

 

DRESS AND PERSONAL GROOMING

 

Employees on a daily basis shall dress as professionals, in businesslike attire in order to set a good example for co-employees, students and the general public.  Employee dress and grooming shall not detract from the learning/educational environment of students' participation in classes, school programs or other school-related activities.  Extremes in style and fit in employee dress and extremes in style of grooming will not be permitted.  Administrators shall be authorized to use their discretion in determining extremes in styles of dress and grooming and what is appropriate and suitable for East Feliciana Parish School Board employees.  No employee shall wear, possess, use, distribute, display or sell any clothing, jewelry, emblem, blade, symbols, sign or other things which are evidence of affiliation with drugs, alcohol, violence or gang related activities.  Policies regarding dress and grooming stress the importance of reducing distractions that inhibit learning and are addressed as an attempt to enhance the learning environment.

 

The School Board shall not discriminate against an employee on the basis of a natural, protective or cultural hairstyle.  Natural, protective, or cultural hairstyle shall include, but is not limited to, afros, dreadlocks, twists, locs, braids, cornrow braids, Bantu knots, curls, and hair styled to protect hair texture or for cultural significance.

 

Employee Dress Code

 

  1. Hair - must be neat, clean and out of eyes.  Designs, colors and/or styles which detract from the learning environment and/or employee's performance are prohibited.  No picks or combs (other than those designed for a hair style) are permitted.

  2. Articles of Clothing:

 

  1. Clothing that has any type of drawing or words that would be vulgar, profane, suggestive, or advertising an affiliation with drugs, alcohol, violence or gang related activities is prohibited.

  2. No see-through or sheer clothing shall be allowed, and no skin shall be visible between pants/trousers, skirts, dresses, and shirts/blouses in any position.

  3. No midriff shirts/blouses are permitted.

  4. Tank tops are prohibited when worn as a single garment.  Tank tops are permissible when worn with a sleeved shirt underneath and/or another shirt "layered" on top.

  5. Shirts/blouses shall be sized appropriately.  Sleeveless shirts/blouses must fit the employee appropriately.

  6. Pants/trousers must be of appropriate length, have a hem or cuff   no cut-offs, cut-outs and/or ragged "distressed jeans" are permitted.

  7. Fringed trousers, undershirts, or pants designed as an undergarment are prohibited from being worn as an outer garment.

  8. No employee (male or female) shall be permitted to bring or wear a cap(s), hat(s), skull cap(s) and/or bandannas) in school buildings, during the regular school day, unless otherwise notified by the administration.

  9. The waist band of all clothing, pants/trousers shall be located on the natural waistline of the employee and be sized appropriately.  No excessively tight clothing, pants/trousers shall be permitted.

  10. Skirts/Dresses:  No mini skirts, skorts, sarongs, sundresses, backless, strapless and/or cut-out/see through dresses shall be permitted.  All other dresses/skirts shall be no shorter than 3” above the knee, be sized and fit the employee appropriately.

  11. Warmups, jogging, windsuits and/or sweatsuits are permissible for coaches and physical education employees, as long as they are sized appropriately, are not sheer and/or see-through and worn during their physical education instructional periods.

  12. Shorts shall not be worn.

    Exceptions:

 

Coaches and physical education employees may wear loose fitting, appropriately sized shorts of an appropriate length during their physical education instructional periods.

 

Bus operators may wear appropriately sized shorts no shorter than 3" above the knee; bike shorts and spandex are prohibited.

 

  1. No leggings or bike shorts shall be worn as a single garment.  Leggings or bike shorts may only be worn with an appropriate length overgarment.

  2. All personnel shall wear appropriate footwear during the work/school day (no shower shoes, flip-flops, slippers; shoes with laces shall be tied and neat.)

  3. Other special occasions requiring a modification of the Employee Dress Code shall be approved by the administration at each campus.

  4. No more than two (2) earrings per ear are permitted for females.  Males are not permitted to wear earrings.

  5. No body rings, i.e. nose, tongue, etc. are permitted.

  6. Any visible body art (tattoos) shall be fully covered.

 

CASUAL DAY

 

A casual dress day may be declared by the chief administrator at the school or office site with the approval of the Superintendent.  Jeans may be worn on "Casual Day."

 

MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

 

The East Feliciana Parish School Board Maintenance Department shall project an image that emphasizes the professional services provided to students, teachers. principals, administrators, and parents.  It is desirable that these East Feliciana Parish School Board employees be distinguishable from other individuals. authorized or unauthorized, who are located on school grounds. as a safety issue.  As such, a uniform look is required and sets and exemplifies a significant safety standard.  Therefore, all employees in the Maintenance Department shall be required to wear a uniform shirt with the School Board logo and an individual's name that will be provided by the School Board.  In addition, the employee must wear appropriate footwear.  The maintenance and custodial staff may wear caps.  Logos on caps shall not be obscene, vulgar, profane, representative of drugs/alcohol use, or gang affiliation, or distractive to the educational environment.

 

This policy has been passed for the welfare and best interest of all employees of the district and as an example to our students and general public of the surrounding community.  Should this policy be violated by employees, the following actions will be instigated:

 

First Offense

 

If the determination is made by an administrator that an employee is in violation of the Employee Dress Code, a conference shall be held with the employee by their immediate supervisor.  A letter of reprimand from their immediate supervisor shall be placed in the employee's personnel file at the local unit of administration and to be removed in one year if no further violations are incurred.

 

Second Offense

 

If the determination is made by an administrator that an employee is in violation of the Employee Dress Code, a conference shall be scheduled and held with the employee, their immediate supervisor and Superintendent.  A letter of reprimand from the Superintendent shall be placed in the employee's personnel file at the local unit of administration and to be removed in one year if no further violations are incurred.

 

Third Offense

 

Administrative action by the Superintendent as deemed appropriate, to include disrespect for authority and/or insubordination and could result in dismissal.
