CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The East Feliciana Parish School Board shall be committed to providing for each of its schools a program of co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities to all students in a manner which allows students equal opportunity to participate in services and activities.  All activities shall be in compliance with pertinent regulations of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).

Students shall not be able to leave a core curriculum class to participate in those activities which call for students to leave class in order to prepare for a program or practice.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  1. To be eligible for the first semester of the school year, a student shall have earned at least six (6) units from the previous school year, which shall be listed on the student’s transcript, and shall have and maintain a “C” average as determined by the School Board when considering all “graded” subjects.

  2. To be eligible for the second semester of the school year, a student shall pass at least six (6) subjects from the first semester.  A senior (12th grade) student who has accumulated 20 or more units shall be required to take at least four (4) subjects/units per semester, none of which shall be subjects/units the student has previously taken and passed.  The four (4) required subjects/units may include college courses that have been approved by the State Department of Education and/or the Louisiana Board of Regents.  A senior attempting four (4) units in the first semester must pass all four (4) units to be eligible in the second semester.  Likewise, a senior attempting five (5) units in the first semester must pass all five (5) units, and a senior taking six (6) or more units in the first semester must pass six (6) units for second semester eligibility.

  3. Specific eligibility rules for special education students other than those classified as “gifted and talented” must be met for their participation.

Individual schools or the School Board may set higher, but not lower scholastic requirements for interscholastic athletic participation.

If a student participant/athlete fails to attend mandatory tutoring or maintain the proper grade point average, he/she shall not be eligible to participate in the extracurricular and/or athletic activity.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Students may participate in those activities that are relevant, supportive, and are an integral part of the structured program of studies and which are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff.  School instructional staff means certificated employees or administrators.  Such co-curricular activities may include:  field trips, festivals, conventions, assemblies, and organizations (science clubs, student councils, 4H, Student Government, FFA, Education Talent Search, Beta, FBLA, COE, etc.) and others directly related to programs of study.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular activities are those activities which are not directly related to the program of studies, but are under the supervision of school instructional staff and are considered valuable for the overall development of the student.  Activities not directly related to programs of study may include:  field trips (entertainment in nature), assemblies (pep rallies, beauty contests), and organizational activities (athletic teams, cheerleaders, pep squads, band, Dancing Dolls, etc.).

Notwithstanding any policy, rule, or regulation adopted by the School Board to the contrary, no student otherwise eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity, including interscholastic athletics, shall be limited in the number of such activities in which the student may participate in a school year.

  1. Extracurricular activities shall not be scheduled during instructional time.

  2. Eligibility Requirements for Extracurricular and Co-curricular Activities:

    1. No student shall be allowed to participate or attend in any event on the day or night while the student is under suspension or expulsion from school.

    2. All work missed by students while on co-curricular or extracurricular events must be made up and completed in a manner that would be required of any of any other students.

    3. Students participating in extracurricular activities shall be required to maintain a “C” average.

Special Education Student Participation

All non-academic and extracurricular services and activities shall be offered to each exceptional child in a way which allows equal opportunity to participate in such services and activities.

NONPARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS WITH OUTSTANDING SCHOOL DEBTS

Any student in grades K-12 who owes money for lost or stolen textbooks, school meals, club fees, sport fees, or vandalism shall not be allowed to participate in graduation exercises or co-curricular or extracurricular activities, including field trips, until the debt is paid in full.

NON-FACULTY COACHES

Non-faculty certified coaches may be permitted to coach certain sports as allowed by the LHSAA, with supervision by the Athletic Director or designee.
